Sony may quit plasma TV business.

Sony is studying scaling down its plasma television business and may withdraw from it completely by the end of next year, industry sources said yesterday.

Intel to stop production of four Pentium D CPUs by year-end.

Intel informed its channel partners in Taiwan that it plans to stop manufacturing four desktop-use Pentium D processors (model numbers 830, 840, 930 and 940) by the end of 2006, according to channel sources. The latest date to accept orders for these four Pentium D CPUs is set on December 15, 2006, with the latest delivery to be done on March 9, 2007, the sources said, noting that Intel also promised help distributors in clearing inventories.

CeBIT 2008: Three new ASUS Motherboards for AMD CPUs.

ASUS is introducing three new motherboards for the AMD platform at this year"s CeBIT - the M3N-HT Deluxe/Mempipe, the M3A32-MVP Deluxe/WiFi-AP and the Crosshair II Formula. All three boards use socket AM2+.

Reports from Taiwan"s graphics card manufacturing industry are revealing that AMD"s recently announced delay of its upcoming flagship graphics processing unit (GPU), the R600, was not just a shock and disappointment to fans of the former-ATI, who have been waiting for graphics cards based on the new chip, but also to AMD"s partners, who were set to introduce products based on the chip at CeBIT in March. AMD and its partners were arranging to launch R600-based products at CeBIT, according to industry sources, and live demos were being planned by individual partners.

Using the stream processing power of Nvidiaň€™s CUDA-enabled graphics cards, the Badaboom media converter will transcode video faster than real-time. But thereň€™s a lot more work that needs to be done because in a demonstration at the NVISION conference in San Jose, Badaboom and the upcoming Elemental Technologies plug-in for Adobe Premiere crashed frequently and sometimes refused to process AVCHD video.

IBM And Hitachi Team Up On 32 Nm Research.

IBM and Hitachi have signed an agreement to work together on analyzing semiconductor devices and structures to get a better understanding of transistor variation and device physics. The joint research effort will be conducted at IBM"s Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y. and at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering"s Albany NanoTech Complex.
