AMD may provide CPUs for Ultra-Mobile PCs, say PC makers.

Demand for Microsoft"s Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPCs) will really depend on whether technical issues such as excessive power use can be resolved, sources at Taiwan PC manufacturers indicated, who hinted that Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) may also become involved in this potential market. Microsoft"s "Origami" project fulfills the UMPC concept as a new category of consumer devices and features the Windows XP Tablet edition OS with mobile-ready technologies.

LED backlights to penetrate notebook market in Q2 06.
The adoption of LEDs as a backlight source for 12- and 14" notebooks should begin in the second quarter of 2006, when the price gap between CCFL- (cathode fluorescent lamp-) and LED- based backlight modules narrows to less than $3, according to LED maker Everlight Electronics.
